on chuck hagel as secretary of defense until the white house provides more information on something that has nothing to do with chuck hagel. >> i am going to fight the idea of jamming somebody through until we get answers about what the president did personally when it came to the benghazi debacle. >> just to be clear, according to senator lindsey graham, a 38-day confirmation process is the ekwifl ens of jamming somebody through. hagel's confirmation was approved by the senate armed services committee on tuesday along party lines, but yesterday republicans blocked an up or down simple majority vote planned by harry reid, so tomorrow the majority leader has scheduled a cloture vote, or if we go to the rule video, the only procedure by which the senate can vote to place a time limit on consideration of a bill or other matter and thereby overcome a filibuster. the procedure requires 60 votes, so now democrats will need support from 60 senators just to overcome the filibuster and schedule a vote on chuck hagel. >> there has never in the history of the country been a filibuster of a def

of this face two moments up on capitol hill. a senate committee may vote to confirm chuck hagel as the next defense secretary. a different committee hold as hearing for the man picked to run the cia. john brennan. for more of these controversial nominees, let's bring in our chief congressional correspondent, dana bash, and gloria borger. dana, what are your sources telling you about chuck hagel's confirmation? >> reporter: well, you know, there are supposed to be at least the chairman, carl levin wants a vote in the senate armed services committee tomorrow but it might not happen. one may reason is that many republicans on the committee don't want it to. we're told that they are circulating a letter urging senator levin to delay it. and they say, these republicans, that they are still waiting for key information from hagel. for example, senator lindsey graham told me he still doesn't p have information about the speeches that hagel gave, who he spoke to, what he said, and what he was paid. and the ranking committee, james inhoff said he's looking for people to slow this train down. senator

that confirmation hearing? because we know chuck hagel had a difficult time, john kerry's was fairly straightforward. does this mean that john brennan may have quite a tough time thursday? >> reporter: he might. carney said he still believes brennan will be confirmed, but in a letter to president obama, 11 senators said that this could complicate those confirmation hearings, including ron widen, susan collins of maine saying that they want more answers about this. of course, brennan is really the only person in the administration who has spoken directly about the drone program making the point that the administration only targets someone if they believe they have good cause, if they believe that there won't be a lot of collateral damage. so this is something that he has talked about. carney pointed to the fact that a lot of this is still classified, so there are probably limits to what he can be asked during this confirmation hearing, but, martin, he's going to get some tough questions. >> and you will be there to report on it. nbc news white house correspondent kristin welker. thank you. >>. >> rep

to die. this week in addition to the chuck hagel defense secretary nomination, the senate is expected to advance president obama's nominee to head the cia, john brennan. senator john mccain is proposing holding up the nomination of john brennan because, well, john mccain. but even in the midst of that conflict, there is an interesting confluence of opinion right now that something major should be changed in mr. brennan's field of expertise. mr. brennan broached the subject in a "washington post" profile that ran about him last october. the acting director of the cia from whom mr. brennan would take over if he is confirmed, that acting director raised the issue in an article "the new york times" published about the cia in december. and now the man, the republican senator who is threatening to hold up the brennan nomination so the acting director has to stay on, this republican senator, he too says that he agrees that something big needs to be changed. >> what we really need to do is take this whole program out of the hands of the central intelligence agency and put it into the departme
